Sow Type

OVERVIEW

Sow Type is a typographic exhibition exploring how letterforms have evolved across three distinct eras; ornate Victorian forms, bold mid-century clarity, and today's clean digital minimalism. Created for the Emily Carr University Type Museum 2025, the installation treats each era as a growing season, with type as a living organism that reflects the culture around it.

About the project

Developed for the Emily Carr Type Museum 2025, Sow Type examines typography through the conceptual lens of garden and botanical science. Three eras: 1850-1880, 1950-1970, and 2000-2025, were each treated as a distinct growing season with their own typographic character.

Typography flower specimens were designed in InDesign with every letter hand-placed to create botanical-style plates for each period. Signage was printed, hand-cut, and mounted onto foam board. Painted leaves, real dirt, and live plants brought the garden metaphor fully into physical space, bridging print design, concept development, and physical installation.

The completed exhibition was displayed publicly at Emily Carr's Type Museum.`
